Schuylkill Haven Area High School students have been busy this fall doing community service work and raising awareness of important issues.
Members of the Biology Club participated in the fall SKIP (Schuylkill Keep It Pretty) Highway Clean-up, cleaning up along Route 61, promoting social conscience, citizenship and responsibility in taking care of the environment.
Biology Club students braved the fierce wind and rain to participate in the Spooky Schuylkill 5K Halloween Walk/Run at the Bartram Trail, as a community service activity, accompanied by adviser Kaye Schwenk. All proceeds benefit Schuylkill County’s VISION, which mobilizes community resources to help create a better present and future for the county. A number of runners took awards. Astin Daniel was the overall male winner. Carter Daniel and Calvin Munster took first and second place respectively in their age divisions. Isabella Hughes placed third in her age division.
Hayley Lenhart, the 2020 First Place High School Winner of the Schuylkill Action Network Street Art Contest and The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, finally had the opportunity to install her winning artwork on campus, as it was delayed due to COVID-19. Hayley also received a $100 gift card. There were nearly 200 submissions from Berks, Chester, Montgomery, and Schuylkill counties, including the submissions from Kaye Schwenk’s Schuylkill Haven biology classes.
Many people in the four counties get drinking water from the Schuylkill River. The original student artwork had to show how we can keep our drinking water clean by keeping our land and storm drains clean.
The Schuylkill Action Network is a collaboration of organizations working to achieve a shared vision of clean water and a healthy environment for the Schuylkill River and its tributaries. The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary is a nonprofit dedicated to connecting people, science, and nature for a healthy Delaware River and Bay, as the Delaware Estuary is the region’s most important cultural, economic, and recreational resource. Congratulations, Hayley!
